What is a whatnot shelf?

A whatnot is a multi-tiered shelving unit designed for displaying decorative objects and books. These pieces typically feature three or four graduated tiers. Originating in the Regency period, they utilise slender columns to separate the open shelves, making them both functional and visually light.

How do I identify Regency rosewood?

Regency rosewood furniture is characterised by dark, richly figured timber that often displays contrasting grain patterns. Makers during this period frequently paired the wood with brass inlay. Pieces from this era also incorporate simulated paint finishes or parcel gilt details to enhance the decorative appearance of the shelving.

Where should I place a chiffonier?

A chiffonier suits living rooms, dining spaces, or hallways where both surface display and low cabinet storage are useful. The upper shelves accommodate books or ornaments. The enclosed lower section provides discreet storage, while the compact footprint fits well against principal walls.
