What is a pot cupboard?

A pot cupboard is an enclosed bedside cabinet designed in the eighteenth century to conceal a chamber pot. They usually feature a single door and a raised gallery top. Today, these versatile cabinets serve as compact bedside tables with useful concealed storage for modern living spaces.

How do I spot a reproduction?

Reproductions from the Georgian Revival period often show machine-cut timber marks and standardised hardware rather than hand-cut dovetails. Examining the secondary woods inside the drawers helps clarify the age. Original eighteenth-century pieces exhibit natural timber shrinkage, hand-forged fixings, and wear patterns consistent with extended use.

Finding matching pairs of antique bedside tables requires patience because most original eighteenth-century pieces were manufactured individually. Many listed pairs are later Georgian Revival creations from the early twentieth century. Original matched pairs command greater interest from collectors looking to balance a bedroom layout.

How do I care for mahogany?

Mahogany furniture thrives in stable room environments away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature shifts. Regular dusting with a dry cloth keeps the surface clean without damaging the antique polish. Occasional application of traditional wax helps nourish the timber and maintain the deep colour of the grain.
