What is a georgian basin stand used for?

These pieces provided a stable surface for a wash basin, water pitcher, and shaving gear in bedrooms before plumbed bathrooms existed. They kept personal washing equipment contained and accessible. Today, buyers repurpose them as plant stands, corner tables, or decorative display pieces in hallways and living spaces.

What woods were used for these stands?

Mahogany is the predominant wood seen across these listings, including dense Cuban mahogany variants favoured by cabinet makers. Satinwood and pine appear less frequently for specific decorative or regional tastes. Inlays in boxwood also add subtle geometric or linear contrast to the primary timber surfaces.

Are campaign washstands different from standard ones?

Campaign versions are built for portability, featuring folding frames and brass hardware that allowed officers to pack them during travel. They prioritize structural cleverness and compact folding mechanisms. Standard domestic stands remain static furniture designed for permanent placement in a fixed room layout.
