What are vesta cases used for?

Vesta cases served as pocket containers for safety matches before the widespread adoption of lighters. Gentlemen and ladies carried them daily to light pipes, cigars or candles. Today, collectors appreciate their varied shapes, crisp hallmarks and detailed surface engraving or enamel work.

How do I identify a George V piece?

You identify pieces from this period primarily through the hallmarks stamped into the silver, which record the assay office, the maker's mark and the date letter. The monarch's profile mark also appears on specific items. Stylistic cues such as early Art Deco geometry or specific Edwardian and George V aesthetic choices help confirm the era.

How should I clean silver accessories?

Silver accessories require gentle cleaning with a soft cloth and a specialised silver polish to remove tarnish without abrading the metal. Avoid harsh dips that can strip dark antiquing from engraved lines. If the piece incorporates enamel, velvet, glass or leather, keep moisture away from those vulnerable non-silver sections during the cleaning process.
