What is a gainsborough chair used for?

These open armchairs were originally designed for reading, writing, and sitting at a desk or in a library. Their wide seats allowed eighteenth-century gentlemen to sit comfortably despite bulky clothing. Today, buyers use them as statement desk chairs or occasional seating in studies and drawing rooms. They provide structured support while maintaining an open, elegant silhouette.

How do you date a gainsborough chair?

Dating relies on examining the timber species, joinery methods, and the character of the carving. Eighteenth-century pieces display period-specific joinery and genuine age in the mahogany, whereas later revivals from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries show different tool marks and secondary woods. Stylistic markers also help distinguish eras, such as George II cabriole legs versus later Chippendale revival fretwork. Comparing the construction details against documented period pieces confirms the exact age.

Are gainsborough chairs comfortable?

Yes, they were built specifically for extended periods of reading and writing. The padded back, upholstered seat, and padded armrests offer substantial support compared to hard wooden dining chairs. While older springs and stuffing may feel firmer than modern upholstery, the generous proportions ensure a comfortable sit. Many surviving examples retain deep, supportive padding.

What wood are they made from?

Mahogany is the dominant timber found across these library chairs, prized by cabinetmakers for its strength and rich grain. Walnut also appears frequently, particularly in earlier iterations and specific revival pieces. In some decorative French salon examples, the timber frame is covered in giltwood rather than left exposed. Brass accents and hardware frequently complement the primary wood.
