What is a slope front bureau?

A slope front bureau is a desk featuring an angled flap that folds down to create a writing surface. Inside, small drawers and pigeonholes organise correspondence and stationery. Beneath this writing flap, the cabinet incorporates storage drawers or rests on slender legs depending on the specific regional style and period.

How do I identify periods?

Identifying the period involves examining timber choices, construction methods, and decorative motifs. 18th-century pieces often display hand-cut dovetails and natural wax finishes, alongside characteristic bombe contours. Later Victorian and revival pieces utilise machine precision, standardised brassware, and specific revival idioms like Louis XV scrolling or satinwood stringing.

Where were these desks used?

These writing desks originally served in private chambers, drawing rooms, and studies for managing personal letters and household accounts. Their compact footprints suited domestic interior spaces. Today, they function effectively in modern home offices or living areas as distinctive writing surfaces with built-in organizational compartments.

What is a bonheur du jour?

A bonheur du jour is a light timber writing desk featuring a small set of drawers, shelves, or a cabinet on top of the main writing surface. The form emerged during the mid-18th century. Victorian makers revived this delicate desk type, utilising rosewood, walnut, and marquetry to appeal to domestic buyers seeking elegant lady writing furniture.
