How do I use a side cabinet?

These cabinets serve well beside a bed for bedside storage or as a small surface in a hallway or drawing room. Their enclosed cupboards and drawers keep personal items tidy while adding regional character to the interior. Larger commodes provide substantial drawer space for linens or clothing in a bedroom. The flat wooden or marble tops also offer a sturdy platform for lamps and decorative objects.

Are marble tops original?

Many nineteenth and twentieth-century cabinets retain their original fitted marble slabs, which protected the wooden surfaces from water and wear. The edge profiles and thickness of the marble generally correspond to the period of the cabinet beneath. Subsequent replacements usually show different edge finishing or lack the natural weathering and minor edge bruising expected on older stone. Examining the seat where the marble rests helps confirm its age relative to the wooden base.

What defines provincial style?

Provincial furniture reflects regional interpretations of fashionable court styles, executed by local craftsmen using native timbers like cherrywood, walnut, and chestnut. The decoration tends towards restrained carving and practical forms rather than extravagant ornamentation. These pieces prioritise sturdy construction and domestic utility over strict adherence to academic design rules. Local variations in leg turning and panel moulding often indicate the specific French region where the cabinet was made.

How do I date a cabinet?

Dating relies on examining construction methods, timber choice, and hardware styles alongside secondary wood species inside drawers. Eighteenth-century pieces typically show hand-cut joinery and solid timber panels, whereas later pieces may incorporate machine-sawn elements and different veneer techniques. Stylistic cues such as cabriole legs, Art Deco geometric lines, or Edwardian proportions provide further guidance. Comparing the carcass construction with known regional examples narrows the manufacturing window.
