What is a french officer travelling clock?

A french officer travelling clock is a portable mechanical timepiece enclosed in a metal and glass case, featuring a handle for transport. These pieces originated to provide accurate time for officers on the move. They combine robust construction with refined dial work, often sitting on desks or travelling inside dedicated leather and wood cases.

How do I wind a carriage clock?

Winding requires a dedicated key inserted into arbors located on the underside or backplate of the movement. You turn the key gently until resistance signals full tension. Care must be taken not to overwind the mainspring, ensuring the mechanical components maintain steady operation over an eight-day cycle.

What is the difference between petite and grande sonnerie?

Petite sonnerie clocks strike the hours on the hour and the current quarters only when a quarter passes. Grande sonnerie clocks strike both the preceding hours and the quarters at every quarter hour. Grande sonnerie movements require more intricate gear trains and are consequently found in higher grade pieces.

Did Napoleon use these clocks?

Pendule d'officier mantle clocks were originally invented for Napoleon to keep track of time during military campaigns. Their portable format allowed officers to carry accurate timekeeping into the field. Later Victorian interpretations retained this campaign heritage while adopting decorative gilt brass and ormolu finishes.

How should I display my carriage clock?

Place the clock on a stable, level surface away from direct sunlight and fluctuating temperatures. A mantel or secure desk prevents accidental knocks while offering a clear view of the dial. Keeping the clock inside its original leather or rosewood travel case when not displayed helps protect the gilt finish.
