What is the difference between an armoire and a wardrobe?

An armoire is a traditional French term for a large cupboard that historically stored clothes, linens, or food depending on the region. Modern usage often treats the two interchangeably, though traditional armoires frequently feature interior shelving alongside hanging space. Provincial examples often started as multi-purpose storage before adapting to modern wardrobes with added hanging rails.

How can I tell if a French armoire is provincial or urban?

Provincial pieces typically utilise local timbers such as fruitwood, chestnut, or regional oak, featuring robust hand-carved panels reflecting rural traditions. Urban pieces often employ imported woods like mahogany or walnut with refined veneers, gilt bronze mounts, and classical styling. Regional differences also appear in the carved motifs, ranging from simple floral patterns to elaborate rococo curves.

How should I care for the wood finish on an antique cupboard?

Maintain timber surfaces by applying natural beeswax periodically to nourish dry wood and preserve the historic patina. Avoid placing large cupboards near direct heat sources or in fluctuating humidity to prevent warping in solid oak and pine panels. Gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth keeps carved details free from buildup without harming historic wax finishes.
