How do I date an old miniature painting?

Dating relies on examining the paper stock, the style of the garments depicted, and the pigments used by the artist. Frame construction and handwritten inscriptions on the reverse also provide chronological clues. Comparison with documented examples from periods like the 19th century helps narrow down the decade of creation.

What is the difference between gouache and watercolour?

Watercolour is a transparent medium where light reflects off the white paper through thin washes of pigment. Gouache contains added chalk or white pigment, making it opaque and matte. Miniatures often combine both techniques to achieve luminous skies alongside solid, richly coloured garments.

How should I hang these framed works safely?

These pieces require placement away from direct sunlight to prevent the fading of delicate watercolours, gouaches, and dyed silks. Stable indoor humidity levels protect the wooden frames and paper supports from warping. Secure picture hooks rated for the weight of the timber and glass ensure safe wall mounting.

What subjects are common in these paintings?

Common subjects include historical rulers, royal portraits, military officers, and narrative scenes featuring courtly lovers or hunting expeditions. Architectural studies and religious temples also appear frequently. Many works document the landscapes and fauna observed during the British colonial period.
