How do I care for antique earrings?

Store each piece separately in a soft pouch to prevent scratching between stones and metals. Avoid exposing organic gems like pearls and coral to harsh chemical cleaners or ultrasonic baths. Clean precious metal and diamond settings gently using a soft brush and warm soapy water. Pat thoroughly dry before storage to preserve the integrity of the mountings.

Are these earrings suitable for everyday wear?

Many sturdy designs from the Edwardian and mid-century periods handle regular wear well if handled with reasonable care. Robust platinum and gold settings secure stones firmly for daily use. Delicate drop configurations, hollow hoops, and pieces set with soft organic materials require greater mindfulness. Reserve fragile or antique pearl-set items for special occasions to protect their delicate structures.

How can I distinguish Edwardian from Victorian earrings?

Edwardian pieces typically favour white metals like platinum and 18ct white gold, paired with airy, lace-like filigree and old-cut diamonds. This era prioritized light, delicate geometry and botanical motifs. Victorian items lean towards warmer tones, utilising yellow gold, rose gold, and substantial cluster arrangements. They frequently incorporate sentimental elements, coral, garnet, or rich coloured gemstones.

Do antique earrings use modern screw backs?

Most true antique earrings utilise traditional hook, lever-back, or post fittings appropriate to their original period of manufacture. Some later mid-century iterations introduce screw-back mechanisms designed for non-pierced ears. Original fastenings often reflect the prevailing technology of the time, though many older pieces have undergone conversion for modern pierced ears.
