What periods do these paintings cover?

The selection spans multiple centuries, beginning with seventeenth-century portraits and extending through Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian eras. Later examples reach into the mid-twentieth century. This broad chronological range allows collectors to explore shifts in portraiture and genre painting from different historical moments.

How should I hang an oil painting?

These works require secure wall fixings suited to the weight of the canvas and its wooden frame. Position the painting away from direct sunlight and fluctuating heat sources to protect the canvas and oil pigments. Maintaining stable environmental conditions helps preserve both the gesso ground and the integrity of the painted surface over time.

What subjects are most common?

Human figures dominate these works, appearing as single portraits, children at play, or groups engaged in domestic and social activities. Subjects range from formal depictions of gentlemen and ladies to nudes and narrative scenes. Artists recorded both specific sitters and anonymous models within pastoral, interior, or architectural settings.

Are original frames important?

Frames contribute significantly to the historical context of a canvas, with many pieces retaining period wooden or gilt frames. These surrounds complement the aesthetic of the artwork and indicate the era of its display. Inspect the frame alongside the canvas to appreciate the complete object as it was presented in the past.
