How do I operate the extension leaves?

Most period tables use a winding mechanism or simple drop-in boards supported by pull-out runners. Pulling the ends apart reveals slots where extra timber leaves rest securely. Ensuring the alignment pins fit properly prevents gaps and keeps the surface level across the entire length of the table.

Are these tables suitable for everyday use?

Solid mahogany and oak construction provides the durability needed for daily meals and family gatherings. Using heat mats and tablecloths protects the polished timber from moisture and scratches. Regular waxing maintains the finish and prevents the wood from drying out in modern heated rooms.

How do I determine the period of a table?

Cabinet making styles, leg shapes, and timber choices offer strong clues to the era of manufacture. Regency and William IV pieces often feature bold pillar supports and heavy mahogany, while Georgian examples display leaner proportions. Examining the construction beneath the top reveals hand-cut joints and hardware typical of nineteenth-century workshops.

Can I seat extra guests comfortably?

The inclusion of multiple leaves allows these tables to expand from seating four people up to twelve or fifteen guests. Checking the leg placement ensures chairs fit easily beneath the frame without blocking diners. Modular D-End designs offer particular flexibility when altering the room layout for special occasions.
