What were vesta cases used for?

Vesta cases held matches securely in pockets or handbags before the widespread availability of electric lighting. Smokers and travellers relied on them to keep matches dry and prevent accidental ignition. The integrated striking serrations on the bottom allowed the user to ignite a match instantly upon retrieval. Many designs attached directly to watch chains or chatelaines for easy daily access.

How do I identify a castle top card case?

Castle top pieces feature a distinct architectural engraving of a famous British building on the primary surface. Look for finely detailed depictions of structures like Windsor Castle or Trinity Church surrounded by elaborate scrollwork. These pictorial cases represent some of the most sought-after examples of mid-nineteenth-century silversmithing. The surrounding metalwork typically displays deep relief and precise bright-cut foliage.

What is the difference between a card case and a cigarette case?

Card cases possess a slender, rigid profile designed specifically to protect paper calling cards from bending in the pocket. They frequently incorporate internal silk concertina partitions or velvet dividers. Cigarette cases feature internal elastic straps or spring bars to secure loose cigarettes horizontally. Their proportions are generally broader and shallower than the upright format of visiting card holders.

How do I date an engraved silver case?

Dating relies primarily on the legible hallmarks stamped into the metal, which include specific date letters corresponding to assay office records. Examining the style of engraving and object form provides a reliable secondary indicator. Victorian pieces often favour dense floral scrolls and architectural scenes, whilst Edwardian examples lean towards lighter ribbons, swags, and geometric carttouches. Georgian boxes display simpler, heavier proportions with restrained borders.
