How were pocket boxes used?

Pocket boxes served practical everyday functions in polite society, keeping matches dry, tobacco fresh, or visiting cards uncreased. People carried them in pockets or handbags as essential items of personal grooming and social etiquette. Specialised versions held specific contents, such as vinaigrettes for aromatic scents or stamp cases for postage. Their secure lids and hinged compartments protected fragile contents during travel.

How do I date an antique box?

You can date most British silver pocket boxes by examining the stamped hallmarks on the interior or rim. These marks typically include a date letter, a standard mark for silver purity, and an assay office symbol. Stylistic clues like monogram styles, construction methods, and decorative motifs also help narrow down the period. Comparing the form to known dated examples provides further confirmation.

Can I use these boxes today?

Yes, many collectors still use these antique boxes to hold modern equivalents like mints, pills, or business cards. Their robust metal construction and working hinges often remain fully functional after a century or more. Care should be taken with delicate hinges and gilt interiors to preserve their condition during regular handling. Gentle cleaning maintains the metal without removing historical patina.
