How do I identify a carver chair?

Carvers feature integrated armrests attached to the back stiles, designed to accommodate the host at either end of the dining table. They share the stylistic motifs and timber of the accompanying single chairs in a set.

Were these chairs used only for dining?

While built primarily for dining rooms, many forms served double duty as office desk chairs, hall seats, or occasional chairs in drawing rooms. Their sturdy mahogany frames allowed them to be moved easily between domestic spaces.

How do I spot a matched set versus an original set?

Original sets share identical timber grain, wear patterns, and subtle tool marks applied by the same maker during construction. Assembled sets often reveal slight variations in height, wood tone, or carving depth upon close inspection.
