What is an embossed brass pot used for?

An embossed brass pot functions primarily as a jardiniere or planter to hold indoor foliage and flowering plants. They also serve as decorative cachepots to conceal plain nursery containers. Larger versions double as log buckets or floor-standing plant holders for domestic hearths and reception rooms.

Are these pots waterproof?

Many antique brass and copper pots were designed to hold plants and may feature soldered seams or inner liners. However, age can affect the integrity of old metal joints and seals. It is advisable to use a modern inner plastic liner or saucer to protect surfaces when watering live plants inside an antique vessel.

How should I clean an antique brass pot?

Cleaning antique brass requires gentle handling to preserve the aged patina that accumulates over centuries. Harsh chemical polishes can strip away the historic surface character entirely. Dusting with a soft cloth and occasionally applying a mild wax is usually sufficient to maintain the metal without altering its appearance.
