How do I hang historic paintings?

Support heavy oil canvases with sturdy picture wire and fixings suited to your wall type, keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Maintain stable room humidity to protect both the wooden stretchers and the historic canvas from warping or cracking over time.

What subjects are most common?

Portraits of notable individuals and romantic pastoral landscapes dominate the surviving works from this era. Marine views and classical mythological scenes also appear frequently across canvases and prints. Religious subjects surface occasionally, alongside decorative still lifes featuring fruit and domestic objects.

How do I spot a later copy?

Examine the pigment composition and the canvas weave under magnification to check for age-appropriate materials. Historic works show natural craquelure and oxidation patterns that modern reproductions struggle to replicate convincingly. Inspect the stretcher frames and fixings behind the canvas for hand-cut nails or aged wood that match the stated period.

Can I mix styles in a room?

Pairing eighteenth-century pieces with later Georgian furniture or even 19th-century decorative objects creates a collected, layered interior. The shared use of traditional materials like mahogany, oil paint, and gilt unifies disparate periods. Allow the scale and colour palette of the artwork to guide your placement rather than strictly matching decades.
