What is an edwardian tallboy?

An Edwardian tallboy is a tall, vertical chest of drawers designed to maximise storage capacity while occupying a minimal amount of floor space in a bedroom. These pieces often feature multiple stacked tiers and may incorporate specialised designs like Wellington locking mechanisms or bow fronts.

How do I style a tallboy?

A tallboy works best against a solid bedroom wall where its height can anchor the surrounding furniture without crowding the room. Keep the top surface uncluttered with perhaps a simple tray or small lamp to respect the vertical lines of the cabinet.

Are these drawers secure?

Many period tallboys and Wellington chests include working brass locks designed to secure the contents of deep drawers. Specialist locking stiles on specific formats like Wellington chests provide a single locking point for every tier.

What woods were used?

Cabinet makers built these pieces using primary timbers such as mahogany, walnut, and oak, often paired with pine internals. Decorative surfaces frequently showcase figured veneers, burr walnut, and satinwood inlay.
