What fits inside an edwardian sterling silver case?

These containers served specific personal functions depending on their original form, holding calling cards, matches, cigars, stamps, or gold sovereign coins. Card cases accommodated thin paper visiting cards used in Edwardian social exchanges, while vesta cases kept matches dry in the pocket.

How do I read the hallmarks?

Hallmarks stamped directly onto the silver reveal the specific year of production, the town assay office, and the standard of the metal. Date letters change annually according to assay office cycles, allowing exact dating of pieces originating between 1900 and 1910.

Were these cases used daily?

Original owners utilised these silver items as practical everyday accessories for correspondence, smoking, and financial transactions. Gentlemen and ladies carried them routinely in pockets or bags, accounting for the gentle handling marks found on many surviving examples.

Are leather elements original?

Certain cigar cases and desk items combined sterling silver mounts with crocodile leather or standard leather bodies. These mixed-media pieces integrated durable hides to protect delicate contents while displaying decorative silver work on the exterior.
