How do I date an edwardian mahogany mirror chest?

Dating relies on stylistic markers such as lighter proportions, satinwood inlay, and Edwardian or late Victorian construction methods. Cabinet construction details often help distinguish pieces from the turn of the twentieth century. Compare the hardware, timber grain, and mirror frame design against known period examples to narrow down the decade of manufacture.

Are the mirror glasses original?

Many pieces retain their original mirror glass, though some replacement is common due to foxing or breakage over a century of use. Original mirrors frequently show slight age spots or lighter silvering deterioration. Examine the back of the glass and the rebate of the frame to check for signs of modern re-glazing or original mounting techniques.

How do I clean mahogany furniture?

Maintain mahogany surfaces using a soft, lint-free cloth and traditional beeswax polish rather than modern silicone sprays. Regular dusting prevents particle buildup that can dull the polished finish. Keep timber pieces away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources to prevent the mahogany veneer from drying out or splitting.
