What is an edwardian mahogany compactum?

An edwardian mahogany compactum is a large multi-purpose storage piece designed to hold various garments within a single footprint. It combines hanging space, sliding trays and drawers. These pieces typically date from around nineteen hundred and reflect the domestic requirements of the period by offering compartmentalised wardrobe storage.

How do I assemble a compactum?

These wardrobes separate into distinct modular sections comprising a heavy base plinth, central and side carcases, and a removable top cornice. Internal components lift out before dismantling. Professional assembly is recommended due to the heavy mahogany construction and the need to plumb mirrored doors correctly within their frames.

How do I distinguish Edwardian from Victorian?

Victorian examples often display heavier proportions, darker finishes, and simpler panel layouts. Late Victorian pieces bridge the transition into the Edwardian era. Edwardian compactums frequently utilise brighter mahogany veneers, lighter satinwood inlay work, and neoclassical revival motifs.

How do I care for mahogany?

Protect the timber from direct sunlight and sudden humidity changes to prevent the mahogany veneer from lifting. Clean surfaces using a soft cloth. Avoid silicone-based polishes and maintain a stable indoor climate to preserve the original polish and brass hardware.
