What is an edwardian chinoiserie side table?

An edwardian chinoiserie side table is a small surface piece made during the early twentieth century, featuring lacquered wood and painted decoration inspired by Asian design traditions. These tables range from simple single-tier occasional stands to nests of four tables and tray top designs created for domestic use.

How do I identify an Edwardian piece?

Edwardian furniture typically dates from the reign of King Edward VII, spanning the first decade of the twentieth century. Pieces from this era often revive earlier styles like Sheraton or Queen Anne while incorporating specific manufacturing methods of the period. Examinations of the wood, lacquer condition, and hardware help distinguish Edwardian items from nineteenth century or Regency antecedents.

Where were these tables used?

These tables served as functional furniture in sitting rooms, drawing rooms, and hallways. They held lamps, books, or tea services while contributing to the decorative scheme of the room. Smaller models like nests of tables or drop leaf variants provided flexible surfaces that could be repositioned easily.

How do I care for lacquer surfaces?

Lacquer requires gentle treatment to preserve the underlying painted and gilt decoration. Dusting with a soft, dry cloth prevents the accumulation of particles that might scratch the finish. Keeping the furniture away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture protects the wood and the integrity of the lacquered layers.
