What is an ebonised sofa side table?

An ebonised sofa side table is a piece of nineteenth-century or later occasional furniture finished in a dark, black stain resembling ebony. These tables were designed to sit near seating or against walls to hold lamps, books, or decorative items. They appear in various styles, including Regency, Victorian, and Aesthetic Movement designs, often incorporating contrasting woods or gilt details.

How do I date an ebonised table?

Dating relies on examining the timber construction, secondary woods, and stylistic motifs present on the piece. Nineteenth-century examples often show hand-cut joints and specific period characteristics like Aesthetic Movement incised lines or Regency brass inlay. Comparing the form against documented styles from the Regency, Victorian, or Art Deco eras helps narrow down the decade of manufacture.

Where should I place a sofa side table?

These compact tables fit naturally beside a sofa, armchair, or in a hallway as a console. Their narrow profile allows them to occupy tight spaces without overwhelming a room. Consider pairing them with seating where the dark ebonised finish can contrast against lighter walls or upholstery.

How do I care for ebonised wood?

Maintain ebonised furniture by dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth to prevent surface scratches. Avoid placing the table in direct sunlight or near heat sources to protect the dark finish and underlying timber. Apply a quality wax sparingly if the surface appears dry, following the grain of the wood.
