How do I clean a painted wooden frame?

Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush to avoid disturbing fragile or flaking paint layers. Avoid using liquid cleaners, solvents, or abrasive cloths, as these will strip away historic pigment and underlying gesso.

Are these frames in their original paint?

Many pieces retain their historic surface finish, while others show traces of overpainting or later decoration applied during the 19th Century. Examining the layers under magnification reveals whether the wear aligns with the age of the underlying carved wood structure.

How do I hang a heavy overmantel mirror?

Large carved wood and gesso mirrors require secure wall anchors fixed directly into structural studs or masonry. Distressed frames are exceptionally heavy due to their dense timber and plaster construction, necessitating professional installation for safety.

What is mercury glass in antique mirrors?
