How do I clean a painted glass mirror?

Clean the glass gently using a soft microfibre cloth and a mild, ammonia-free glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth rather than directly onto the surface. Avoid touching any painted or gilded areas with moisture to protect the original pigments and metal leaf from damage.

Are these mirrors suitable for bathrooms?

Most antique mirrors feature organic glues, traditional backing materials, and silvered glass that react poorly to sustained high humidity and steam. Positioning them in dry reception rooms, hallways, or bedrooms preserves the wooden frames and silvering against moisture degradation.

How do I hang a heavy overmantel mirror?

Heavy overmantel mirrors require professional installation directly into wall studs or masonry using appropriate weight-rated fixings and brackets. Ensure the hanging wire or D-rings on the antique frame match the structural capacity required for safe wall suspension.

How can I tell Venetian mirrors apart?

Venetian mirrors typically display elaborate engraved glass borders, floral crests, and segmented mirror plates held by decorative glass clips. They rely less on heavy wooden frames and more on mirrored glass components shaped and decorated with floral motifs.
