How do I care for a dark oak press?

Keep timber pieces away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity changes to prevent the wood from splitting. Apply a coat of natural beeswax periodically to maintain the surface sheen. Avoid using modern silicone-based sprays, which can build up on the antique finish and attract dust.

What is the difference between a linen press and a wardrobe?

A traditional linen press was specifically designed with internal sliding trays or shallow shelves for stacking folded textiles. Wardrobes generally provide full-height hanging space for garments. Many older pieces have been converted internally over time to accommodate modern clothes hangers.

How can I tell the period of an oak press?

Examine the construction methods, tool marks on the timber, and hardware such as hinges and locks. Seventeenth-century examples often display hand-carved panels and pegged joints, while Georgian versions favour cleaner architectural lines. Hardware changes can indicate later repairs, so look for consistency in the fixings.

Will a large oak press fit in a modern room?

These pieces are substantial by design and require careful measurement of both floor space and ceiling height before purchase. Many older presses were constructed in two sections to aid transport and installation. Check stairwells and doorways if moving the cabinet to an upper floor.
