What is a dark mahogany sutherland table?

A dark mahogany sutherland table is a compact, folding drop-leaf table designed to save space when the leaves are dropped. These pieces typically feature narrow fixed tops and wide hinged leaves supported by pivoting gatelegs.

How do you fold a sutherland table?

You lift each drop leaf and swing the supporting leg outward until it locks beneath the leaf. To close the table, you swing the leg back inward and allow the leaf to drop vertically.

What rooms suit a sutherland table?

These tables work well in sitting rooms, studies, and hallways as occasional or side tables. Their slim profile when folded allows them to sit flat against a wall until extra surface space is needed.

How do I identify an Edwardian sutherland table?

Edwardian examples often incorporate lighter satinwood banding or delicate inlaid decoration on the mahogany top. They tend to exhibit refined proportions and lighter turnings compared to earlier Victorian counterparts.
