How do I date a silver mounted bottle?

British hallmarked silver provides the most reliable dating evidence, showing the assay office, date letter and maker's mark directly on the mount. Comparing the cut glass style and stopper type helps confirm whether the collar is original to the glass body. Unmarked pieces rely on stylistic indicators, such as Victorian globular forms or geometric 1930s Art Deco cutting, to establish their production period.

What is a double-ended scent bottle?

A double-ended bottle is a symmetrical glass vessel with a cap at each end, allowing the owner to carry two distinct liquids simultaneously. Victorians frequently used these for perfume in one compartment and smelling salts in the other. They usually feature an engraved sterling silver centre band that marks the division between the two glass chambers.

How should I clean antique glass and silver?

Wash the glass interior and exterior using warm soapy water and a soft bottle brush, avoiding harsh abrasives that scratch the cut facets. Dry the crystal thoroughly to prevent water spots from forming within the cut patterns. Polish the sterling silver mounts separately with a specialist silver cloth, taking care not to let polish residue gather in the crevices of the engraved metal.

Are atomiser bulbs usually original?

Rubber bulbs and mesh hoses on vintage atomisers degrade over decades, meaning most surviving examples have replacement bulbs fitted by later owners. The glass body, metal collar and spray mechanism remain the primary components of collector value. Finding a period-appropriate replacement bulb keeps the atomiser functional while preserving its historical aesthetic.
