How do I date a painted wooden frame?

Examine the preparation layers beneath the paint, such as traditional gesso and the type of wood used in the construction. Hand tool marks on the timber often point to earlier nineteenth century or eighteenth century craftsmanship. Look closely at the fasteners and joinery methods. Older pieces utilise traditional construction techniques that differ significantly from twentieth century manufacturing.

Are these pieces cleaned or restored?

Many items retain their original painted surfaces with natural patination accumulated over decades. Minor touch ups to the paint or gesso are common in pieces of this age. Inspect the description for notes on conservation work. Preserving the original finish remains standard practice for period items.

How do I hang a heavy overmantle mirror?

These substantial frames require secure fixing directly into wall studs or masonry using heavy duty brackets rated for the weight. Professional installation ensures the piece stays firmly anchored. Check the stability of the wooden frame joints before hanging. The weight of the glass and carved wood exerts considerable downward force.

What is French provincial style?

French provincial describes furniture and decorative objects created in the provinces rather than Paris, often showing simpler, rustic interpretations of court styles. These pieces emphasise functional elegance and painted finishes. Carved details on provincial items tend to be less formal than Parisian counterparts. Cream and muted paint tones work well with this domestic aesthetic.
