How do I use one today?

Many people use these cabinets to store fireplace accessories, kindling, or logs beside a working hearth. Others adapt them as small side tables or hallway storage. The enclosed metal-lined interior protects surrounding floors and furniture from dust and debris.

How do I tell Victorian from Edwardian pieces?

Victorian cabinets often feature heavier carved details, darker timbers like rosewood or walnut, and more ornate revival styles. Marquetry and ormolu mounts are common on these earlier examples. Edwardian pieces tend to lean towards lighter oak or mahogany with simpler lines, reflecting the brighter interiors of the early twentieth century.

Are original shovels usually included?

Some surviving cabinets retain their original brass or metal shovels, which fit into a dedicated side sleeve or interior compartment. Many pieces have lost their original shovel over the decades of use. The presence of the matching shovel adds completeness to the piece.
