What is a claw set solitaire?

A claw set solitaire is a piece of jewellery featuring a single prominent gemstone held securely by a series of metal prongs. This construction method elevates the stone to allow light to enter from multiple angles. Such designs appear across rings, earrings, and pendants, focusing visual attention entirely on the central material without distraction.

How do I care for my ring?

Caring for a claw set solitaire involves regular inspection of the metal prongs to ensure they remain tight against the gemstone. Professional cleaning helps prevent the accumulation of oils beneath the setting. Removing the piece during heavy physical activities protects both the precious metal and the mounted gemstone from unnecessary wear.

How do I identify the period?

Dating these pieces relies on observing specific design motifs, gemstone cutting styles, and metal purities characteristic of eras like Victorian, Edwardian, or Art Deco. Old European and old mine cut diamonds frequently point toward early twentieth-century manufacture. Hallmarks stamped inside ring bands provide official assay office stamps and date letters that narrow down the exact year of creation.

Can I wear them daily?

Daily wear is suitable for robust metals like platinum and higher carat golds paired with durable gemstones like diamonds or sapphires. Softer stones require greater caution during routine use to avoid surface scratching. Selecting a secure setting height and sturdy band width helps ensure the piece withstands everyday routines comfortably.
