What are cased serving cutlery sets?

These are matched groups of dining implements, such as fish servers or berry spoons, housed in dedicated fitted boxes for presentation and storage. They were utilised during formal meals for serving specific foods safely and elegantly at the table.

Dating relies upon examining metal hallmarks, maker marks, and the overall style of decoration, such as Art Nouveau curves or Victorian engraving. The materials used for the case lining and handles also provide clear indicators of the period of manufacture.

Were these used every day?

Most cased sets were reserved for special occasions, formal dinners, or given as wedding gifts, which accounts for their high survival rate. The protective velvet or satin-lined boxes kept the silver and plate safe from daily wear.

What is the difference between silver and plate?

Sterling silver items are solid precious metal throughout and bear official assay office hallmarks indicating their purity and origin. Silver-plated pieces consist of a base metal core covered by a thin layer of silver applied through electroplating or older manufacturing methods.
