What is a sutherland table?

A sutherland table is a narrow drop-leaf occasional table designed to fold flat for easy storage against a wall. The hinged leaves are supported by swinging gatelegs when raised. Victorian makers favoured this design for sitting rooms where space was at a premium. They function as small side or lamp tables that expand when needed.

How do I date a walnut sutherland table?

Dating relies on observing the timber choice, construction methods, and stylistic details present in the piece. Victorian examples from the mid to late nineteenth century often feature burr walnut veneers and ceramic castors. Later pieces from the early twentieth century show subtle shifts in turning styles and finish. Comparing the hardware and joinery helps place the table within its specific era.

Where should I place a baby sutherland table?

A baby sutherland table suits compact spaces such as beside a sofa or in a reading nook. Its slender profile when folded allows it to occupy minimal floor space. Opening one or both leaves provides a stable surface for drinks or books. They work well in smaller rooms where standard dining tables prove too large.

How do I care for burr walnut veneer?

Burr walnut requires gentle cleaning with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. Avoiding direct sunlight and excessive heat preserves the rich tone of the timber veneer. Occasional application of appropriate furniture wax maintains the lustre of the polished surface. Care should be taken to protect the wood from moisture.
