How do I clean a camphorwood trunk?

Wipe the exterior surfaces gently with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust without damaging the timber or polish. Avoid using harsh chemical polishes or excessive moisture, which can harm the natural wood grain and finish.

Is the original scent supposed to remain?

Camphor wood naturally retains its characteristic aromatic scent for generations, though it may fade slightly over time. Light sanding of the interior can sometimes refresh the fragrance if it has diminished.

Were these trunks used by the military?

Many examples were built as military campaign furniture for officers on colonial service, requiring sturdy timber and protective metal hardware. Others served sailors on merchant vessels as sea chests for personal belongings.

How can I date an antique trunk?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods, the style of brass hardware, and any visible maker marks or labels. Nineteenth-century pieces often display hand-cut dovetails and specific military brass configurations characteristic of the Victorian or Georgian periods.
