Why did military officers use camphor wood?

Camphor wood naturally secretes aromatic oils that deter moths, silverfish, and other pests. This property made the timber ideal for protecting wool uniforms and linen during long sea voyages. Officers also valued the wood for its stability and resistance to warping in humid tropical climates.

How do I date a campaign chest?

Dating relies heavily on construction methods, hardware design, and secondary materials. Mid-nineteenth-century examples often display heavy brass binding and flush campaign handles. Later Victorian and Edwardian pieces frequently incorporate decorative hand-carving or leather coverings rather than purely utilitarian military mounts.

Are these boxes suitable for modern coffee tables?

Their flat lids, sturdy construction, and substantial proportions make them practical alternatives to conventional coffee tables. They provide generous internal storage for blankets and books while anchoring a living room seating arrangement. Placing a glass top over the surface protects the antique wood from spills while preserving the original finish.

How do I maintain the scent of the wood?

The natural fragrance originates from volatile oils within the timber cells. Over decades, the surface scent can diminish as the outer layer dries out. Lightly sanding the interior bare wood exposes fresh timber fibres and instantly revives the traditional camphor aroma without chemical sprays.
