What is a pot cupboard?

A pot cupboard is a compact bedside cabinet originally built to conceal a chamber pot behind a single door. They often include a marble top for easy cleaning and an internal shelf for storage. Today, buyers use them as standard bedside tables or small lamp tables in sitting rooms, valuing their compact footprint and decorative burr walnut surfaces.

How do I date a cupboard?

Dating relies on carcass construction, handle styles, and the character of the walnut veneer. Victorian pieces often feature heavy proportions and rich polishing, while Edwardian items lean towards lighter framing. Art Deco examples introduce geometric lines and book-matched veneers from the nineteen-thirties. Looking at secondary interior woods also helps determine the period of manufacture.

Where should I place it?

These cabinets suit bedrooms as bedside storage or living rooms where a compact surface is needed next to a chair. Their figured timber adds warmth and texture to neutral interior schemes. Keep them away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources to protect the delicate veneer and traditional polish from drying out.

Burr walnut veneer is stable when kept in a room with steady humidity and temperature. The historical technique of laying thin timber over solid carcases has survived centuries of domestic use. Avoiding excessive moisture and rapid temperature shifts ensures the veneer stays secure to the underlying wood.
