What is a brown wooden storage bench?

A brown wooden storage bench is a traditional seating item incorporating a built-in compartment beneath the seat for household storage. Examples range from early elm and oak box settles to Victorian hall seats and Edwardian monks benches. These pieces were constructed to serve busy entrances, hallways, and farmhouses by providing both a place to sit and a concealed space for boots, textiles, and everyday items.

How were box settles used historically?

Box settles served multiple domestic functions in communal areas like farmhouse kitchens, hallways, and taverns. The high panelled back helped block cold draughts from stone floors while individuals sat near the hearth. The enclosed box beneath the seat kept blankets, outer garments, and dry goods safe from dampness and pests.

How do I care for an antique wooden bench?

Maintaining an antique wooden bench involves keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity changes to prevent splitting. Regular dusting with a dry cloth preserves the dry finish. Applying traditional wax sparingly helps nourish older wood surfaces without building up unwanted residues or altering the natural patination.
