How do I use an etagere?

An etagere is designed for the open display of ornaments, small collections, and decorative objects rather than heavy book storage. Their tiered open shelves allow light to pass through. Place them in sitting rooms or studies where their slender frames can stand freely against a wall without dominating the floor space.

Are the shelves adjustable?

Many of the open bookcases and shelving units included here feature adjustable shelves supported by internal wooden pegs or brass tracks. This allows you to alter the vertical gaps between tiers. Utility pieces from the early twentieth century often retained this flexible shelving to accommodate varying book heights.

A whatnot is a multi-tiered open stand designed primarily to hold small decorative items, curiosities, and books within domestic rooms. They became a staple of Victorian interiors. Their lightweight construction and multiple levels make them practical for adding display space without feeling heavy in smaller rooms.
