A highboy is a tall chest of drawers built in two parts, usually comprising an upper chest resting upon a lower stand or a second larger chest. They were developed to provide ample drawer space while taking up minimal floor area in domestic chambers.

Where were highboys used?

These pieces were traditionally placed in bedrooms, dressing rooms and private chambers for storing linens and garments. Today, they function effectively in hallways, living rooms and bedrooms as statement storage units.

How do I date a highboy?

Dating involves examining the timber species, joinery techniques, handle hardware and overall stylistic proportions. Earlier pieces often feature walnut or oak with hand-cut dovetails, while later revivals utilise machine-cut elements and different secondary woods.

How do I care for wood?

Protect the timber by keeping pieces away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight that can dry out the finish. Apply high-quality natural wax periodically to nourish the wood and maintain its deep lustre.
