What is a vitrine table used for?

These tables were designed to hold and display delicate personal possessions such as pocket watches, rings, medals, and small porcelain objects. The glazed top allows visitors to inspect the collection from above without handling the pieces directly. In modern settings, they serve a similar purpose while functioning as accent furniture in drawing rooms or studies. The interior fabric lining provides a soft background that highlights the items on show.

How do I distinguish Edwardian from Georgian examples?

Edwardian vitrine tables frequently display lighter satinwood inlays, painted floral decoration, and kidney or serpentine shapes influenced by revivalist tastes. They often date from around the turn of the twentieth century and lean towards delicate proportions. Georgian pieces, originating much earlier in the eighteenth century, typically rely on solid mahogany construction with heavier, more restrained architectural lines. Their ornamentation is usually confined to subtle carving or classical stringing rather than extensive marquetry.

How should I clean the glass and fabric inside?

The glass top should be cleaned gently with a standard glass cleaner applied to a cloth rather than sprayed directly, preventing moisture from seeping into the wooden frame. Silk or velvet linings benefit from careful vacuuming with a soft brush attachment to remove dust. Harsh chemical solvents must be avoided to protect both the polished timber surfaces and any metallic ormolu mounts. Regular dusting with a dry lint-free cloth preserves the finish of the wood.
