How do I care for antique leather?

Maintain the material by keeping it away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity. Apply a specialist leather wax sparingly to nourish the hide. Avoid modern chemical cleaners, as they can strip the original finish and dry out centuries-old fibres.

Were these boxes meant for travel?

Many examples, particularly studded trunks and campaign cases, were engineered for arduous journeys by carriage or ship. Other iterations, such as jewellery caskets and stamp boxes, remained static on domestic desks. The inclusion of iron mounts, heavy handles, and robust locks usually indicates a design intended for transit.

How can I date a leather box?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods, lock types, and decorative styles characteristic of periods like the Georgian, Regency, or Victorian eras. Maker marks and engraved initials also offer precise clues to origin. Hardware changes over the centuries, shifting from hand-forged iron to machine-tooled brass.

What is a faux book box?

A faux book box is constructed to mimic the appearance of a leather-bound literary volume or a stack of books. They served as discreet containers for documents or valuables on library shelves. Some examples double as games boards with leather-tooled playing surfaces inside.
