What is the difference between a wardrobe and a linen press?

A wardrobe is primarily designed for hanging garments on rails, whereas a linen press contains internal sliding trays or shelves specifically for storing folded textiles flat. Historically, linen presses predate the widespread use of full-length hanging wardrobes and evolved from large functional cupboards found in country houses.

How do I date an antique press?

Dating relies on examining the construction methods, timber choices, and hardware styles. Hand-cut dovetails, secondary woods like oak or pine, and the profile of mouldings help determine the period. Earlier eighteenth-century pieces often feature solid oak with fielded panels, while nineteenth-century versions frequently utilise mahogany with veneered surfaces and applied mouldings.

Can these cupboards be dismantled for moving?

Many larger antique presses and wardrobes were constructed in multiple sections, such as a cornice top, a central cupboard section, and a drawer base, allowing them to be taken apart. Solidly built pieces from earlier centuries may not separate easily, so checking the assembly joints is essential before attempting transport through narrow doorways.

How do I care for antique wood furniture?

Maintenance involves keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity changes to prevent the wood from splitting or warping. Regular dusting with a soft dry cloth preserves the finish. Applying a traditional beeswax polish periodically helps nourish the surface and maintains the warm lustre of the antique brown timber without building up heavy residues.
