What is a campaign trunk?

A campaign trunk is a portable storage box built in sections with inset brass handles for military officers on active service. These pieces were constructed to be easily packed, transported and reassembled during travel.

Camphorwood was selected for maritime trunks because its natural aromatic oil repels insects and resists damp conditions. This timber protected stored clothing and documents effectively during long sea voyages.

How were brass mounts used?

Brass straps, corners and studs reinforced the structural joints of wooden trunks against the shocks of travel. Metalwork also added decorative contrast to the dark tropical timbers commonly employed in these chests.
