What is a brass flush handle desk?

It is portable campaign furniture designed with recessed metal handles that sit level with the timber surface. These pieces were built for travel and colonial service. They typically take the form of secretaire chests, writing boxes, and desks made from dense woods like mahogany, teak, and camphor wood.

How do I use a campaign desk?

Many examples feature a secretaire drawer that drops down to form a writing surface, often lined with leather and fitted with interior compartments for stationery. Other versions open as folding boxes or stand as multi-part desks designed for practical daily writing and organised storage.

What woods are used for these desks?

The pieces on this page utilise durable timbers such as mahogany, teak, camphor wood, and rosewood. These materials were chosen for their strength and resistance to warping during travel. Some items also incorporate ebonised wood alongside brass mounts and cast iron carrying handles.

How do I date a campaign desk?

Dating relies on identifying the period styles, wood types, and construction methods seen across 19th century and Edwardian examples. Details like inset brass hardware and sectional assembly point to military and campaign origins. Most items date from the Victorian era, spanning the mid to late 19th century up to the early 20th century.
