What is a campaign chest?

A campaign chest is a piece of portable furniture designed for military officers on active service during the nineteenth century. These chests separated into modular sections to ease transport by ship, horse, or wagon. Protective brass corners and recessed handles prevented damage during frequent loading and unloading. Today, these functional storage pieces serve as distinctive chests of drawers in domestic interiors.

Why use camphor wood?

Camphor wood was chosen for campaign trunks because its strong natural aroma deterred moths and other insects. This protected uniforms and papers from damage in tropical climates. The timber is also lightweight yet durable, resisting moisture and humidity. Its pleasant scent often lingers in antique trunks decades after manufacture.

How were they transported?

These chests travelled across the British Empire packed with uniforms, equipment, and personal documents. They were constructed in two stackable halves so each section remained manageable for porters or pack animals. Removable turned feet and sturdy drop handles on the sides facilitated lifting. Once at a destination, the sections were reassembled and secured with metal pins or hooks.
