What is a brass castor upholstered sofa?

A brass castor upholstered sofa is a traditional seated piece of furniture supported by small metal wheels on its feet. These wheels allowed heavy wooden frames to be moved across carpets and flooring. Such seating spans multiple historical eras, including the Regency and Victorian periods, reflecting changing tastes in domestic comfort.

How do I identify a Victorian sofa?

Victorian sofas often feature dark hardwood frames, elaborate carved details, and deep button upholstery. They frequently incorporate sprung seats and sturdy brass castors for mobility. Makers from this period embraced both robust Chesterfield forms and elegant chaise longue designs.

What woods were used for these sofas?

Makers utilised a variety of timbers for the internal frames and visible legs, including mahogany, walnut, and general hardwood. These materials provided the necessary structural strength for heavy upholstered bodies. Exposed wooden elements often displayed the grain quality typical of 19th-century cabinet making.

Are chaise longues and sofas the same?

While both provide upholstered seating, a chaise longue is specifically designed for reclining with an extended seat and a single raised end. Standard sofas offer symmetrical seating intended for multiple people sitting upright. Both forms frequently share similar brass castor and upholstery details within the same period.
