What fits inside a brass bound vanity box?

These boxes contain fitted compartments designed for glass scent bottles, small jars, brushes, and personal jewellery. Many also include velvet-lined trays and secret drawers. Lower sections often conceal hidden spaces or removable panels intended for letters and documents.

How do I tell Victorian from Regency boxes?

Regency examples often feature leaner proportions with crisp brass stringing and lighter mahogany or rosewood surfaces. They tend to date from the early nineteenth century. Victorian pieces frequently display heavier brass banding, darker coromandel or burr walnut timbers, and more complex internal mechanical tiers.

Were these boxes used by men or women?

Both gentlemen and ladies utilised these portable chests for personal grooming and dressing while travelling. Gentleman's variants often accommodated razors and shaving mugs. Ladies' versions focused on jewellery storage, makeup jars, and delicate sewing implements.

How should I clean the timber and brass?

Maintain the timber surfaces with traditional beeswax to nourish the old polish without stripping the finish. Avoid modern silicone sprays that damage antique polishes. Polish the brass mounts carefully using a soft cloth, taking care not to smear cleaning agents onto the surrounding wood or fabric lining.
