What is a blue lalique vase?

A blue lalique vase is a moulded or pressed glass vessel from the early twentieth century. These objects combine Art Deco styling with distinct colour treatments like opalescence and blue staining. They serve as decorative centerpieces that utilise relief patterns derived from nature and figures. Each piece represents specific manufacturing methods of the period.

How do I date a blue lalique vase?

Dating relies on the recorded production periods of the specific design, typically falling in the 1920 and 1930 brackets. Stylistic markers and finishing techniques help place the object within this timeframe. Comparison with documented examples in archives provides further clarity on manufacture dates. The evidence on this page centres primarily on pieces from the 1920 period.

How should I display a blue lalique vase?

Place the vase where natural light can pass through the body to activate the opalescent properties. Direct illumination reveals the interplay between frosted surfaces and blue staining. Keep the vessel on a stable, flat surface away from high traffic areas due to the weight and nature of the glass. Position it against a neutral background to let the sculptural relief stand out.

What causes the blue colour in these vases?

The blue effect comes from specialised glass formulations containing opacifying agents or from surface treatments like blue patina and cobalt glass. Opalescence scatters light to create shifting blue and amber tones. Staining involves applying pigment directly into the recessed parts of the moulded design. This hand-finished step deepens the contrast against the clear or frosted body.
