How do I identify a Kazak rug?

Kazak rugs are identified by their bold, large-scale geometric patterns, primary colour palettes, and heavy wool pile. They typically originate from the Caucasus and display distinct tribal medallions. Look for heavy construction and characteristic motifs such as stars, hooked polygons, and strong borders that separate them from finer Persian city weaves.

What is the difference between a rug and a runner?

Runners are narrow, elongated floor coverings designed specifically for hallways, corridors, and narrow spaces. Standard rugs are proportioned for general room placement. In this inventory, runners provide long rectangular formats while rugs encompass square and standard rectangular proportions.

How do I care for an antique wool carpet?

Antique wool carpets require gentle treatment, regular vacuuming without a beater bar, and professional cleaning when necessary. Keep them out of direct sunlight to protect the natural dyes. Using a proper underlay helps prevent slipping and reduces friction between the wool foundation and the floor.

Where were these carpets made?

These carpets were produced across the Caucasus region, including areas such as Shirvan, Karabagh, Kuba, and regions associated with Kazak and Kurdish weavers. Some pieces reflect neighbouring Persian and Armenian stylistic influences. Local tribal groups and village workshops utilised regional materials, including hand-spun wool and natural dyes.
